My Suteki Experience

By Ana A. Cavazos

Suteki…the name deliciously rolls off your tongue, and the Feng Shui décor astounds you. As you walk into the Sushi and Japanese cuisine restaurant, you can’t help but feel the comforting and relaxing ambiance that slowly washes over you, as you mentally and physically shed all the day’s worry.

A pathway flows beautifully to the left, and around the entire restaurant to meet back at the doorway. On your way through the dining area, are several private seating areas. They are enclosed by walls and the doorway can be closed off from the restaurant with a sliding wall partition to give you complete privacy. These areas seat four people, and are a great relaxing space in which to hold meetings, or engage in private, romantic meals. I can see engagement announcements, meetings in which to wine and dine business partners, or gatherings in which to simply impress someone. The black marble-top tables and cherry-wood chairs with black leather seats, compliment these areas, as well as the rest of the restaurant décor. Of course, you have the choice of a booth, or you can sit at the sushi bar, which is especially popular with the hip, younger, trendy crowd.

At the back of the restaurant, is the Tempeyaki seating, where cooks will prepare your meals while you watch. This is a spectacular place where large groups can enjoy each other’s company while getting a taste of a truly upscale experience. To the left of the sushi bar is a conveniently placed V.I.P. area which seats 40 people. It is partitioned with a low wall which definitely defines their space, but allows the group to enjoy the entire dining area. Listen to live International music on Fridays and Saturdays. Sitting in this perfectly relaxing dining area, one would never guess that this fabulous place has a bar.

The bar which is located immediately to the left of the entrance, quickly became my favorite area. It is a trendy area which is elegant, but casual. You have a choice to sit up close and personal at the bar, at the booth large enough for a group of ten, or at the cozy dining area in the middle of the bar. The bar ambiance emanates a great calming feeling, where you can relax, while you listen to the karaoke, or live bands on special days. The best part is that happy hour, Monday through Fridays from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., is that it offers you, not only drinks at a great price, but finger foods which will complement anyone’s diet. We found everything, from fruit to eggrolls, to chicken wings, to submarine sandwhiches. I overheard a young man comment that it was a cool hang-out place. There were different age groups which were co-existing well in this area because of the strategically placed seating.

I recommend the California Roll. The taste is not harsh or overpowering of raw fish, but interesting. It certainly was something I ate comfortably, and I reveled in its unique taste. The Edi, Kani Su Salad which contained shredded shrimp, crab meat, and cucumber with a sweet vinegar dressing was a delightful experience. The combination of these seafood tastes mixed with the refreshing burst of flavor from the cucumber, created a unique blend in my mouth. I loved it, and had at least two helpings of this dish.

For those of you who worry about trying Sushi for the first time, the menu features a lunch special which gives you the opportunity to order and share meals, for a comfortable $7.99 price. Be sure to visit Suteki, and bask in the good energy emanated by the Feng Shui décor, good music, and delicious interesting meals. If you need any help selecting meals, or want to see the entire restaurant, be sure to visit one of the four owners, Manuel Salinas, Evelia Salinas, Fernando Garza, and Blanca Garza. They were very cordial and helpful when selecting our seating area, and our meal. It was an enjoyable experience, and I will be back with friends.
